Student Terms & Conditions
Effective: March 18, 2026. Last updated: October 2, 2026.
These Student Terms supplement the General Terms of Service. By registering as a student on DiscoverTutor, you agree to both documents.
1. Payment Authorization
By adding a payment method and booking sessions, you authorize DiscoverTutor to charge the saved payment method for:
- Session fees after a booking is confirmed and the session start time has passed. A temporary hold for the session amount is placed about 47 hours before each session, and the charge is completed about 20 minutes after the session starts.
- Travel surcharges (per-kilometre fee for travel-mode sessions), if applicable.
- Extra-student fees for multi-student sessions, if configured by the tutor.
- Late cancellation fees (50% of the session price) if applicable.
- Extra time you accept during a live session.
- Your share of a group session with friends, and any part of another family's share you cover when their payment fails, up to the full session price.
- Any other amounts described in these terms.
Charges may be processed automatically (off-session) without requiring you to be present on the platform at the time of charge.
2. Cancellation Policy
You may cancel a confirmed session at no charge if the scheduled start time is more than 24 hours away. For cancellations within 24 hours of the session:
- You must provide a cancellation reason.
- The tutor may choose to apply a 50% late cancellation fee or waive the charge.
- If the tutor does not respond within 12 hours, the session is cancelled at no charge.
- Group sessions with friends follow the rules in section 10.
3. Tutor No-Show Claims
If your tutor does not attend a confirmed session, you may file a no-show claim from the session start time until 15 minutes after the scheduled start. Filing a claim will:
- Block or reverse any charge for that session.
- Notify the tutor and DiscoverTutor support.
- Allow the tutor 1 hour to appeal. If appealed, DiscoverTutor will review within 7 days.
4. Student No-Show
If you do not attend a confirmed session and do not cancel in advance, the session is treated as completed. The full session fee will be charged and the tutor will be paid.
5. Payment Failures
If a session charge fails (for example, due to insufficient funds or an expired card), DiscoverTutor will automatically try the charge again up to 4 more times over about 11 days, with increasing delays between attempts. You will be notified of failed attempts by email. Please update your payment method promptly to avoid further issues. If every attempt fails, the session remains unpaid and your account may be subject to review.
If no hold can be placed on your payment method within 24 hours of a session, the session is cancelled. You cannot book a paid session with an expired card, and you cannot remove your payment method while you have upcoming paid sessions, an active hold, or unpaid charges.
6. Minors & Guardians
If the student is a minor (under the age of majority in your jurisdiction), the account must be created and managed by a parent or legal guardian. The guardian is the account holder, is responsible for all obligations under these terms, and must provide appropriate supervision.
If you give a child their own login, you choose what they can do, such as booking previous tutors, booking new tutors, or finding and booking with other students. You are responsible for everything done through your child's login.
7. Off-Platform Prohibition
You agree not to arrange sessions outside of DiscoverTutor with tutors you met through the platform in order to avoid platform fees. Circumventing the platform may result in suspension or termination of your account.
8. Loss Recovery
You authorize DiscoverTutor to initiate permitted reversals, offsets, or collections against your payment method to recover losses caused by fraud, chargebacks, misconduct, or rule violations, to the extent permitted by applicable law. You remain responsible for any such losses.
9. Consultations
You can book one consultation with each tutor who offers them. A consultation is for one student only.
10. Group Sessions with Friends
When you book a session with friends from other families:
- The session is one-time only. Each friend's family, and your parent if your login needs approval, must accept before the request reaches the tutor.
- The price is split evenly per student, and your own discount applies only to your share. A hold for the full session price is placed on your payment method, and only your share is charged unless you cover for another family.
- If another family's payment fails, you agree to cover part of their share so the tutor is paid in full. If they pay before the tutor is paid out, you are refunded what you covered.
- If you leave and other students stay, you are not charged. If you are the last student and cancel within 24 hours of the session, the tutor may charge 50% or 100% of the base price, or nothing.
11. Tutor Changes and Cancellations
If your tutor cancels a confirmed session, you receive a full refund. If your tutor moves or cancels a session within 48 hours of its start, you may also receive a discount, as described in section 6.17 of the General Terms of Service.
12. Session Extensions
If you accept a request to extend a live session, the extra time is charged to your payment method at the same rate as the session.
13. Ratings and Reviews
Your ratings and comments must reflect your own real experience with the tutor. The rules for when you can rate a tutor are in section 11.6 of the General Terms of Service.
14. Homework and Practice
Homework and practice questions are created with AI and reviewed by tutors, but they can still contain mistakes. Check anything you are unsure about with your tutor or teacher. When you mark a question in your own homework with a thumbs down, it is removed from the practice question bank.
15. Student Hub and Study Together
If you use Find Students, friends, or Study together, you agree to treat other students with respect, share only what you are comfortable sharing, and follow section 9 of the General Terms of Service. Parents are responsible for supervising children who meet other students.
