Tutor Terms & Conditions

1. Service Standards

As a tutor on DiscoverTutor you agree to:

• Provide lawful educational tutoring services only.
• Maintain an accurate and truthful profile, including qualifications and subject expertise.
• Honor confirmed booking commitments and arrive on time for scheduled sessions.
• Conduct sessions in a professional, respectful manner.
• Not impersonate another person or misrepresent your qualifications.
• Not offer services that are deceptive, prohibited, or falsely represented.
• Not ask students for their last name, contact details, or payment outside DiscoverTutor.

1.1 Meeting Modes and Pricing

You may offer sessions in one or more meeting modes: online, office (at your location), or travel (you go to the student). Each mode has its own hourly rate that you set. For travel-mode sessions, you may also set a per-kilometre surcharge to cover travel costs.

1.2 Multi-Student Sessions

You may allow more than one student per session. For each meeting mode, you set the maximum number of students and a per-extra-student fee (per hour) that is charged for each additional student beyond the first. Until you save your own values, the defaults apply: up to 2 students online, 1 student for office and travel sessions, and $5 per extra student per hour. The total amount shown to students at checkout includes any extra-student charges.

Each student in a session needs a course you teach, and each student with a saved profile receives their own recap. Consultations are for one student only.

2. Cancellation Responsibilities

Tutors may cancel a confirmed session before the scheduled start time. If a student requests a late cancellation (within 24 hours of the session), you will be presented with two options:

• Accept with late fee: The student is charged a 50% late cancellation fee. After the 10% platform fee, the remaining amount is paid to you.
• Accept with no charge: The session is cancelled at no cost to the student.

If you do not respond within 12 hours, the cancellation is automatically resolved with no charge to the student.

2.1 Tutor-Initiated Changes Within 48 Hours

The notice tier is locked when you submit a time-change request. If less than 24 hours remain and the student accepts the new time, the student receives 10% off that session and 10 percentage points are added to your applicable platform fee. From 24 through 48 hours, an accepted change has no additional adjustment.

If you cancel directly, or the student declines or does not answer a request for which you selected cancellation as the fallback, a penalty discount is queued for a future booking: 15% when less than 24 hours remained, or 10% when 24–48 hours remained. The same percentage is added to the platform fee for that future booking.

Each incident creates a separate penalty discount. Only one applies to an eligible booking, it applies only when the student has no other discount, and it is restored to the queue if that booking is cancelled. Penalty discounts may reduce the tutoring rate below the normal $20-per-hour discount floor.

These penalties do not apply to group sessions booked by friends from different families. Time-change requests are not available for those sessions.

3. No-Show Claims & Appeals

Students may file a tutor no-show claim from the session start time until 15 minutes into the session. If a claim is filed:

• You will be notified immediately by email and on your sessions dashboard.
• You have 1 hour to submit an appeal with an explanation.
• If you appeal, the claim enters a manual review period of up to 7 days.
• If you do not appeal within 1 hour, the claim is resolved in the student's favor (charge blocked or refunded).

Repeated no-show incidents may result in account suspension at DiscoverTutor's discretion.

4. Payouts

For eligible paid tutoring sessions, the platform fee is 10% when your questionnaire, academic summary, and valid homework are completed on time; 13% when your questionnaire and summary are completed but homework is missing or late; and 15% when the summary is missing or late. An incomplete questionnaire adds 5 percentage points, producing tiers of 15%, 18%, or 20%. Homework counts toward this calculation only when the tutoring part of the session charge, not counting travel surcharges, is at least $20. For consultations, the fee depends only on the questionnaire.

The academic summary, and homework when it counts, are due 24 hours after the session ends. In a session with several students, every required recap must be on time for the lower tier to apply. If AI homework generation fails because of a system error before the deadline, your homework deadline moves to 24 hours after the failure, if that is later. Your fee tier for a session also applies to any paid extension of it.

5. Off-Platform Prohibition

You agree not to solicit or arrange sessions outside of DiscoverTutor with students you met through the platform. Circumventing the platform to avoid fees may result in suspension or termination of your account.

6. Subject & Content Restrictions

You may only offer lawful educational services through DiscoverTutor. DiscoverTutor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to remove listings or suspend accounts that offer services deemed inappropriate, non-educational, or in violation of applicable law.

7. Loss Recovery

You authorize DiscoverTutor to offset, reverse, or recover amounts from your payouts to cover losses arising from fraud, chargebacks, erroneous transfers, policy violations, or misconduct, to the extent permitted by applicable law.

8. Listing Requirements

To appear in search, you must have a verified email address and phone number, your name and birthdate on file, a completed Stripe account that can receive payouts, completed booking settings, availability, and at least one meeting mode with a rate that is either free or at least $20 per hour. Connecting a calendar is optional.

9. Session Recaps, Homework, and AI Content

You are responsible for the accuracy of the summaries you write and for reviewing every AI-generated homework question before you publish it. Do not put private or sensitive information about a student in a recap. Private safety reports are kept separate from recaps and are never shown to the student.

AI-generated questions you keep in a published recap may be added to the practice question bank described in section 11.5 of the General Terms of Service, and you grant DiscoverTutor a licence to use them that way. Extra recaps you add from a student's portfolio are not charged, have no deadline, and do not affect your fee tier.

10. Discounts You Offer

Discounts you set up in your settings are shown to students and applied automatically at checkout, and you agree to honour the discount shown when a booking is made. New tutor accounts start with default discount rules, which you can edit or remove at any time.

11. Session Extensions

You may ask to extend a live session in 15-minute blocks, and the student must accept. Extra time is paid at the same per-minute rate as the session.

12. Group Sessions with Friends

A group session booked by friends from different families reaches your Pending Sessions only after every family has accepted. As long as at least one family's payment succeeds, you are paid the full session price, because the other families cover a failed share. If the last remaining student cancels within 24 hours of the session, you choose whether to charge 50% or 100% of the base price, or nothing.

13. Police Information Check

If you submit a Police Information Check, it must be your own, genuine, and unaltered. Our team reviews it before your profile shows a badge. Submitting a false or altered document may result in the termination of your account.

14. Blocking

You can block a student, or an email address or phone number, so that account cannot find you in search, view your profile, or book with you.

15. Taxes

You are responsible for reporting your income and for collecting and remitting any applicable taxes, such as GST/HST. Earnings summaries, income reports, and receipts on DiscoverTutor are provided for convenience and are not tax advice.
