About this course
This courses introduces students to IR and NMR spectroscopy for the identification of simple organic compounds. Topics include the chemistry of the following compounds: benzene and other aromatic compounds (aromaticity, electrophilic aromatic substitution, nucleophilic aromatic substitution, substituent effects), aldehydes and ketones (nucleophilic addition, oxidation, reduction, condensation reactions, tautomerism), carboxylic acids and their derivatives, amines (basicity, reactions), alcohols, ethers and related compounds.
Prerequisites: The following course must be completed previously: CHEM 221
